Manifesto
Lots to say and no time to say it. Finished my dissertation yesterday, had my MA interview in Brighton today (got in), decided to dye my hair brown because the bleach is making it fall out.
At the same time, loads of brilliant critics and bloggers have been talking about what they do and how they’re going to do it better. Jake from AYT is going to consider his responses differently;...

A poem for Jack White
Oh Jack White
You are thin and slight
You look a bit like you’d fizz and burn in daylight
(Like a vampire or a goth)
Oh Jack White
Your new album is alright
Actually it’s better than that, it’s fucking sweet, right?
(Even the slow ones)
Oh Jack White
You make me want to be a Luddite
Smash up my mp3s and watch uTorrent burn tonight
(even the Four Tet stuff)

Why Sam Halmarack is amazing and why I am a dick...
Went to Forest Fringe last night and it was sweeeeeeet. I got to apologise to Andy for being a twat at least 3 or 4 times, and I discovered by new favourite thing in the history of everything: Sam Halmarack and the Miserablites. (I find it’s easier to remember if you call them Sam Allardyce and the Mysterons though. Just a wee tip for you there.)
After a first half of Augusto Corrieri...

Libraries gave us power and all that
I’ve just finished reading the Simon Price Manics biog, and now I’ve gone all A-level Sociology and am thinking about class and how we define it and stuff. Because I’m fascinated by how we make aesthetic judgements, I’ve been thinking about how class is tied up with art, and how snobbishness can come in many different forms.
At uni we’ve learnt all about Pierre...

Andy Field from Forest Fringe responds
… to this post I wrote yesterday about how a close-knit artistic community could exclude new audiences.
Hi Meg,
Hope you’re well.
So first things first, you are absolutely not ‘being an arsehole’ in raising this. The question of who is seeing the work and who feels comfortable seeing the work is an absolutely vital one. It’s worth asking over and over again. At Edgelands this summer...

The dangers of a supportive community
A blog post by Andrew Haydon has been kicking around Twitter today. In reacting to Lyn Gardner’s recent review/preview/whatever of Forest Fringe’s residency at The Gate, he is covering several of the arguments in the critics vs bloggers debate. While I am making this something of a pet subject in my (nearly finished!) uni dissertation, it was something slightly different in...

Back at the band’s hotel, Nicky was thrown out of the bar for wearing only...
– The library was closed again today so I’ve been reading Simon Price’s Manic Street Preachers biog. He tells me on twitter that a lot of it is bullshit. I’m pretending otherwise.

He’s called Dan and he temps in the box office we were using when he’s in-between acting jobs. He signed a card with his face on and everyone on twitter said he had lovely handwriting. HE CALLED ME LOVELY. I said that if we weren’t renting I’d DEFINITELY get him over to Leicester to fit...
